Compliance
Compliance
Product compliance, made clear and commercially practical.
Hawthorne supports brands with SDS coordination, CLP classification, label review and technical documentation for chemical products across automotive, home, industrial and janitorial markets.
Speak to Our Technical TeamCompliance should never be an afterthought.
Chemical products need more than good branding and strong performance. They must be correctly classified, safely labelled and supported by accurate documentation before they enter the market.
Whether you are launching a new cleaning product, reviewing an existing range or preparing to export, Hawthorne helps make the compliance process clearer, more structured and easier to manage.
SDS Support
Safety Data Sheet coordination for products, raw materials and finished chemical goods.
CLP Review
Product classification, label elements, pictograms, signal words and hazard statements.
Market Readiness
Practical guidance for labels, claims, export requirements and product documentation.
What compliance covers
Product compliance looks at the full technical picture behind a chemical product. This includes the formula, raw material data, hazards, packaging, intended use, market location and claims being made.
The Risk
Incorrect compliance can damage more than a label.
A non-compliant product can create problems across the entire supply chain. Retailers may reject it, distributors may refuse to handle it, customers may lose trust and authorities may require changes before the product can continue to be sold.
Hawthorne helps brands approach compliance before those issues appear, so products are developed with classification, labelling and documentation in mind from the start.
Our compliance process
Formula Review
We review the formulation, raw material data and intended product use.
Classification
The product is assessed for hazards, label elements and documentation needs.
Documentation
SDS, label guidance and supporting technical information are coordinated.
Market Review
We consider where the product is being sold and whether further checks are required.
SDS support
A Safety Data Sheet is a key technical document for chemical products. It explains hazards, handling, storage, first aid, transport, exposure controls and disposal information.
SDS documents are used by manufacturers, warehouses, distributors, professional users, retailers and emergency responders. They need to match the actual product and be kept up to date when formulations or raw materials change.
Handling
Safe use, storage, PPE and exposure guidance for professional environments.
Transport
Information required to understand movement, storage and dangerous goods considerations.
Emergency
First aid, accidental release, firefighting and disposal information.
CLP classification and labelling
CLP classification determines how hazards are communicated on product labels and documentation. Depending on the formula, a product may require pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements and supplemental information.
Not every cleaning product requires hazard symbols, but this should never be guessed. Classification depends on the ingredients, concentrations, pH, physical properties and intended use.
Label compliance
A retail label must be legally accurate, but it also needs to be clear and usable. One common mistake is trying to place too much technical information on the front of pack, or copying another brand’s label without checking the actual formulation.
Hawthorne helps brands balance compliance with clean, professional product communication.
Important
Compliance depends on complete formulation data.
Accurate classification relies on knowing what is in the product and at what concentration. That may include raw material SDS documents, full ingredient percentages, fragrance allergens, pH, preservative information, transport data and supplier documentation.
If the formulation data is incomplete, the compliance outcome may also be incomplete.
Market-specific compliance
A product that is suitable for one market may not automatically be suitable for another. The UK, EU and USA can all require different checks depending on the product type, ingredients, claims and sales channel.
For example, products being sold in California may require additional review around ingredient disclosure, warning statements and specific state-level requirements.
UK
Product classification, GB labelling, SDS and supply chain documentation.
EU
EU market considerations including CLP, UFI and relevant product documentation.
USA
Support preparing for additional market review, including state-level considerations.
When compliance should be reviewed
Compliance should be reviewed before launch, but also whenever something changes. Even small formulation or supplier changes can affect classification, labelling or documentation.
- The formulation changes
- A raw material supplier changes
- The product is sold into a new country
- The packaging format changes
- New claims are added
- A retailer requests updated documentation
- The product is being exported
- Regulations or guidance change
Compliance FAQs
Does every product need an SDS?
Many chemical products require SDS documentation, especially for professional use, distribution, warehousing and B2B supply. Requirements depend on the product and market.
Does every product need hazard symbols?
No. Some products may be non-hazardous under classification rules. The decision must be based on the full formulation and supporting data.
Can Hawthorne review an existing label?
Yes. We can review labels against the formulation, SDS and intended market to identify areas that may need correction or improvement.
Can you help with California compliance?
Yes. Hawthorne can help coordinate the technical information needed for California-related product review, including ingredient and formula data where required.
Can compliance be handled alongside formulation?
Yes. This is the preferred approach. Building compliance into development helps avoid delays and relabelling later.
Need compliance support?
Whether you are launching a new product, reviewing an existing range or preparing for export, Hawthorne can help coordinate the technical compliance pathway.
